When I saw the One Industries Exo Shell, I thought it was the solution to all of my chest and back protection desires. It appeared lighter and more comfortable than similar items; usually with something like this you get either full length arm protection, an awkward zipper in front or no chest protection. This straps and goes on and comes off like a normal chest protector increasing comfort and ventilation over full body armor protectors like the Alpinestars Bionic Pro Jacket for BNS.

On the Track
After getting the shoulder and side straps adjusted to my liking I hit the track. On the track the One Industries Exo Shell is very comfortable. It ventilates well, better than similar items I have worn such as the Alpinestars Bionic Pro Jacket for BNS and Troy Lee Designs Shock Doctor BP 7850 Hot Weather Base Protective Vest. That said it is hotter than riding with no chest protector at all and can be a bit uncomfortable on hot days. There’s no way around that, the trick is finding a balance between ventilation, bulk, comfort and protection that works for you.
I love the fact that the Exo Shell is more like a typical chest protector than a pressure suit. This makes it more comfortable and allows it to vent better than similar items that are incorporated into a shirt type design. Another benefit of this is that when you’re done with your moto it isn’t a pain in the ass to take the Exo Shell off; your sweaty body isn’t stuck to the “shirt” type liner, just un-velcro the straps and pull it over your head.
What I Didn’t Like
The only thing I don’t like about the One Industries Exo Shell is its length. It feels like the front is too short and the back is too long. The long back goes beyond the waistline of my pants, making it difficult to tuck my jersey in. The short front leaves room for roost to hit you where other roost deflectors would usually have you covered. The odd lengths are uncomfortable off the track, but on the track (other than the fact that you have to run the rear of your jersey untucked) aren’t all that noticeable comfort-wise.
The One Industries Exo Shell is an excellent option for a moto guy looking for under the jersey protection beyond what a typical foam roost protector offers. On the track, you can barely see it under your jersey. Protection wise it bridges the gap between full body armor and a lightweight under jersey protector, offering CE level spine protection and plastic chest protection without a shirt style liner or attached elbow pads.
