What is MIPS?
MIPS was developed by brain surgeons and scientists to reduce rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to the head. It imitates the brain’s way of protecting itself by giving the helmet its own low-friction layer that looks like a thin sheet of plastic between the EPS foam and the comfort liner. When the helmet is subjected to an angled impact, the low friction layer allows the helmet to slide and absorb much of the energy created by the impact. MIPS says that most accidents occur at an angle, on uneven surfaces, they are not a flat drop on an even surface, which makes sense.
Using the One Industries Gamma Helmet with MIPS
Fit: I am in between sizes, it is very hard to find a helmet that fits me properly, no matter what the size charts say. My head measures at 23” this is between Medium and Large for most helmet brands – this makes helmet fit tricky for me. I thought the 6D ATR-1 was going to be the perfect fitting helmet for me as their size Large is supposed to fit 22-7/8”-23-3/4” heads. At first I felt like it fit well, but after wearing it a bit, the ATR-1 became first helmet I have noticed moving on my head while riding.
With that explained, the One Industries Gamma was tight the first time I put it on. After allowing it to break in a bit it became more comfortable, but still creates a small pressure point at the front of my head. Check out One Industries’ size chart to get the right fit for your head.
Comfort: The One Industries Gamma’s liner is nothing special, in fact it resembles something you would find in a cheap helmet more than something you would find in a high end helmet. One offers a Special Edition Athlete Liner for $50, I haven’t tried it yet, but I assume this is a nicer, higher end liner.
Durability: This helmet feels well made. The fasteners, visor, mouthpiece and liner attachment all feel pretty solid. The only issue I ran into is with the chrome paint, it scratches very easily, it even scratched while pulling goggles on. I have worn this helmet for a year, with no hard crashes (knock on wood) and everything other than the chrome paint has held up very well.
One Industries Gamma MIPS Gallery
It’s great to see so many new helmet technologies become available lately. MIPS is the least expensive and available from the most brands. I couldn’t see buying a typical helmet anymore with all the options available. The One Industries Gamma is one of these helmets. It is one of the least expensive and is a nice option for someone looking for a helmet that offers a little more than the standard eps foam & shell helmet.
